Technology in the Sunday Paper, Tourists on Segways in Charlotte, NC.

This morning, the Charlotte Observer ran an article about 3-D TV, a topic I've recently blogged about:

"But the first sales figures on 3-D TVs and a newly released consumer survey indicate that the industry has a long way to go before the new technology catches on in a big way, if it ever does...In the sets' first three months on the market, beginning in February, consumers nationwide spent about $55 million on new 3-D-capable TVs and related equipment, according to an NPD Group survey of some of the largest retailers carrying the products, including Best Buy and Amazon.com."  -3-D TV sets are selling, but no instant craze
Kristena Hanson, L.A. Times, 7/4/10, in the Charlotte Observer

In the wad of ads that came with my Sunday paper,  I noticed a huge glossy spread by Sony, highlighting the company's 3D system and other newer technologies:

An ad from Wolf Camera and Image featured a Nikon COOLPIX S1000PJ, with a built-in mini-projector:

Back to the Sony spread, I noticed the Sony Dash Personal Internet Viewer:

    "Hello, I'm Dash"

"As the Dash™ Personal Internet Viewer, I use over 1,000 free apps and your Wi-Fi®connection to deliver the information and entertainment you crave—right to your bedroom, kitchen or office. Now you can access always-fresh web content with the touch of a finger, without being tethered to your PC."

"Easy to customize, just choose the apps you want to display—weather, traffic, sports, social networking, movies, music, games and more."

Why not just get a kickstand for your iPad, slate, or smartphone?

I also noticed the ad for the Sony Reader Touch Edition:

    Technology in my world:

Later in the day, I was driving down Central Avenue in Charlotte's Plaza-Midwood neighborhood. Stopped at a light, I snapped a picture of some tourists on Segways:

Technology, as it is embraced in Charlotte, North Carolina!

WSJ's Interactive Graphics: China's Housing Markets, via Innovative Interactivity

    Dissecting China's Housing Market - Multimedia - WSJ.Com
"How does China's housing market work?  Who are the main players? And why have housing prices gone up so much?  Watch an animation explaining all this and more."

The Wall Street Journal has dedicated a great interactive webspace that focuses on the country's housing market.  Interactive content includes a timeline that shows the correlation between government policies and housing prices, videos that provide an overview of the situation and how the dream of home ownership is shared among many who live in China. The info-graphics are well-done.

For further information and analysis about the WSJ piece, see Tracy Boyer's recent post on the Innovative Interactivity blog:
Wall Street Journal utilizes motion graphics to illustrate China's housing market.

Light Blue Optics: Interactive Microprojectors in your Day-to-Day Life

Light Blue Optics(LBO)is a privately-owned company in Cambridge, UK, with a facility in Colorado Springs, USA. LBO offeres a holographic laser projection technology that maintains high-resolution images from a pico projector.  This technology looks quite useful, as it has a variety of applications that could easily support our day-to-day activities.

Here are a few pictures of the technology in action from the LBO website:

    Automotive

The pictures above demonstrate how a holographic laser can be projected on a windsheild or side-view mirror to provide safety information to the driver of a car.

    Retail/Industrial

The above picture shows how LBO's system can project pictures onto curved and angled surfaces, ideal for use in retail settings.

The mini-projector system can be used for collaborative interaction with multimedia content:

From the LBO Website:  How It Works

"LBO's novel approach to miniature projection has a range of differentiating features and benefits.  The term "holographic" referes not to the projected image, but to the method of projection.  A diffraction pattern of the desired 2D image, calculated using LBO's patented holographic algorithms, is displayed on a custom-designed phase-modulating Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) microdisplay.  When illuminated by coherent laser light, the desired 2D image is projected."

Urban Screens, Urban Scenes, Media Facades: Obscura Digital's Outdoor iGoogle Artist Themes Launch in NYCU

The event took place over a year ago, but I thought it was worth re-visiting, given the theme of this blog. For more pictures, visit the photo gallery of the event on the BizBash New York website.
"Google wanted to make a big impression for the debut of its iGoogle Artist Themes. Obscura Digital delivered by transforming New York City’s MeatPacking district into a massive outdoor art gallery for three nights. Using sixteen projectors perched atop three rooftops at the intersection of Little West 12th, 9th Avenue, and Gansevoort, we projected the artist themes onto the exteriors of ten buildings in a synchronized, animated display complete with audio. Many of the 70 participating artists—including architect Michael Graves, artist Jeff Koons, designer Marc Ecko, and photographer Anne Geddes—came out to see their work writ large. In spite of the rainy night, the brightness of 30,000-lumen projectors was hard to miss and people on the street stopped to take in the spectacle"

The World is My Web Browser: Interactive Technology in Public Spaces

Off-the desktop Interactive technologies are spreading quickly, across many platforms.   It seems that within the next 3-5 years we will be able to have instant access to a social and dynamic web, with information and entertainment at our fingertips, anywhere we go.

The "world-as-web-browser" concept is one I've touched upon in the past.  I'd like to focus on this topic in future posts.

I came across some of the information in this post on the Future of Media Blog, maintained by the folks at
the Interpublic Emerging Media Lab, based in California. This blog is a must-read!

The Saatchi & Saatchi ad agency in the UK created interactive games that provide people waiting in bus shelters the opportunity to pass the time by bashing digital falling eggs.

A more utilitarian approach to interactive touch screens is the EyeStop bus stop, a concept created by researchers MIT's SENSEable City Lab, along with the city of Florence and the city's transit service:
